On Wednesday evening the Bowdon Touch Rugby squad won the coverted Carrington Touch Rugby Premiership Plate & Championship Competitions!!! A superb effort by all involved , well done to you all!
What It's All About
Most rugby players see touch rugby as a game you play to warm up for the real thing, but Touch is a thriving and fast growing sport in its own right which Bowdon has embraced over the last couple of years.
Played on a near-full size pitch with 6 players a side and rolling subs, touch is a fast paced game that requires traditional rugby skills, fitness, tactical nous, speed guile, defensive organisation and discipline (although you don’t need to possess all of these attributes to be part of our team!).The Australian and New Zealand rugby unions acknowledge touch as a key part of the development of their rugby players skillset, and many of the set moves you see executed at the highest levels of the game have been derived from the touch rugby paddock.
Growing from our womens / girls section, we currently have over 50 people regularly training and playing in a competitive league against some of the best touch sides in the north west. The ethos of our touch section is that it is a game for all and our squad of players includes:
- Members of the mens, womens and junior sections (including our current first team squad)
- Players aged 14 to 60+
A number of parents playing competitively alongside (or against) their children – an opportunity that their aging bodies cannot afford in the full contact version of the game.
So what next for Bowdon Touch? With participant numbers in the contact game reducing whilst Touch continues to grow, we are looking to build upon our great start and follow clubs like Chester and Crewe and Nantwich in formally establishing a touch rugby section. We want to offer regular competitive fixtures for all standards and a pathway to representative touch rugby. We are looking to put the infrastructure in place to facilitate this over the coming months: training facilities, coaching, England Touch affiliation and league / tournament entry.
If you want to give touch rugby a try, head down to the club on a Sunday morning (11 - 12.30), and keep an eye on the website for news of upcoming events. No previous experience or special kit required (although some boots or astros are ideal if the ground is a bit wet). All welcome (age 14+).
Contact Clive Wilkins or Anne Marie Pegler for further information and to get involved in this growing activity at the club.
